From Beliefs to Action: Embodying Masonic Values in Everyday Life

Updated: Jul 1, 2024

With the fundamental understanding of Masonic principles of Brotherly Love, Tolerance, Charity, and Truth, one might wonder what upholding these moral principles looks like in everyday life. These principles cultivate a fruitful life through the intentional, principle-based actions of Freemasons as they strive to create a world of high moral standards - one that they, their loved ones, and all of humanity would seek to inhabit. It is not solely through grand gestures or rituals in which these principles are brought to life, but in the everyday interactions and choices they make.

Whether greeting a neighbor, extending a helping hand with no expectation of return, welcoming a new member with open arms, or returning home to one's family after a long day- these small moments are where the true spirit of Freemasonry comes alive.

"Excellence is not a singular act, but a habit. You are what you repeatedly do."

-Shaquille O'Neal, Renown Athlete & Freemason

For the Mason, these cherished principles are not merely to be understood, but actively practiced. One might encounter a Mason willing to change a stranger's flat tire during a busy commute or inviting a lone individual to join them at their table. We can look to Masons to inspire us all, whether we are members of the Craft or not. In exploring how Freemasons bring their principles to life, you may find guidance for your journey or take pride in the noble work of your Masonic brothers.

Brotherly Love

In our fast-paced world, it can be easy to lose sight of the importance of slowing down, practicing care, approaching others with kindness, and leading with high moral intentions. This is where the Masonic principle of Brotherly Love shines particularly brightly.

Freemasons carry out Brotherly Love as they aid, seek to learn from, and appreciate all those they interact with. This involves expending otherwise “extra” energy to come to the world with goodness and universal truths of love.

To a Mason, greeting others and making them feel welcome is a natural extension of this value. Offering mentorship and guidance to all who cross their path comes from the belief that we all deserve life with loving treatment.

In a world that seemingly stops for no man, the Masonic virtue of Brotherly Love stands as a vital reminder of our shared humanity and the power of compassion in our daily lives.

Tolerance

Masonic Tolerance is about listening to those different than oneself without judgment. Freemasons do not seek to fully understand or agree on others' perspective but to recognize that they believe differently.

Words matter, and Masons choose to respect individuality and listen to others who may not be like them. They exhibit a willingness to accept those who are different and treat everyone with respect. Freemasons do not exclude for the sole reason of difference - instead, they set the standard in their communities by exemplifying that a moral life encompasses accepting all.

Charity

Masonic Charity is the nurturing force behind a Masons character and actions, instilling a profound commitment to love and benevolence. From the moment they embark on their Masonic journey, Freemasons are actively engaged in a lifelong embodiment of Charity.

Freemasons do not see Charity as a task to complete, but rather an ongoing pursuit, exemplified similarly in their dedication to knowledge.

Charity represents the essence of humanity's interconnectedness, encapsulating the spirit of "one mankind." It is the embodiment of goodness and love that binds individuals together, transcending barriers and fostering a sense of unity and solidarity among all. In Freemasonry, Charity is not just a principle to be upheld; it is the heart and soul of the fraternity, as it is interwoven with each fundamental principle of Freemasonry, demonstrating itself through acts of Brotherly Love, Tolerance, and Truth.

This value resonates deeply within the rich history of Freemasonry, manifesting in both the celebrated tales of renowned Freemasons and the countless untold stories of everyday acts.

Truth

Living a life of truth is one that sets all Masons free. Masons understand that when one is true to themselves, life becomes easier. They take pride in their moral values and show that being true in both intentions and actions is paramount. Freemasons recognize that acts of untruth often stem from unrecognized aspects of Brotherly Love, Tolerance, Charity, and Truth, while truth can be inherently uncomfortable, it is within that discomfort that we find growth, learn from others, and seek further enlightenment.

In Conclusion,

The principles of Brotherly Love, Tolerance, Charity, and Truth are not just words for Masons - they are a way of life. By embodying these values in their everyday interactions and choices, Freemasons work to create a world that reflects their high moral standards. While it may start with small acts of kindness and respect, the ripple effect of living these principles can be profound. Freemasons exemplify that true growth and fulfillment come from a genuine commitment to making the world a better place, one person, action, and word at a time.
