Leaders Among Us: The Role of Mentorship in Freemasonry

Updated: Jul 1, 2024

When examining the rich history of the Scottish Rite Masons, there is a striking number of world-famous names, leaders, and pivotal historical figures who have been part of this fraternal organization. From presidents to astronauts, captains of industry to renowned artists, the list of accomplished Scottish Rite Masons is truly remarkable.

So, we must ask - what is it about Freemasonry that has produced so many great leaders throughout the ages? When we look at the basic principles and moral teachings of this order, the answer becomes clear.

Theodore Roosevelt a famous leader and Freemason, waving his hat, as he stands in car, ca.1910.

"Wide differences of opinion in matters of religious, political, and social belief must exist if conscience and intellect alike are not to be stunted, if there is to be room for healthy growth."

The core tenets of Brotherly Love, Tolerance, Charity, and Truth central to Freemasonry are the same qualities that define effective, transformative leadership. An unwavering commitment to these ideals allows Masons to achieve greatness in their respective and diverse fields.

Brotherly Love and Leadership

Take the principle of Brotherly Love, for example. Masons are taught to see all of humanity as part of one family and to treat even those who are different with the same care and respect as they would their own. This capacity for empathy and inclusion is a hallmark of the greatest leaders, who can unite diverse groups toward a common cause.

Tolerance and Leadership

Similarly, the Masonic value of Tolerance enables Masons to engage with leaders of the world - whether in politics, business, or beyond - with an open mind and willingness to find common ground. Rather than judging or dismissing those with differing views, Masons seek to understand and respect other perspectives. This openness is vital for navigating complex, global challenges.

Charity and Leadership

Charity, in the Masonic sense, instills a profound commitment to love and benevolence, it encourages leaders to naturally prioritize the well-being of others above personal gain or ambition. Masonic leaders who have embodied such values are more likely to make decisions that benefit society rather than serve their own interests or those that are like them.

Truth and Leadership

The Masonic commitment to Truth - both within oneself and in the world - cultivates the moral courage and integrity that define great leadership. Masons understand that true change comes not from deception, but from a dedication to honesty and accountability.

Historically Celebrated Freemasons

It is no wonder, that so many of history's most impactful leaders have been Scottish Rite Freemasons. From presidents like Theodore Roosevelt to pioneering astronauts like Buzz Aldrin, to civil rights activists like W.E.B Du Bois - they have all drawn from the depth of Masonic teachings to shape the course of human events.

Every Mason A Leader

But the Masonic legacy of leadership extends beyond the celebrated names found in history books, museums, and places of admiration. In lodges all over the world, there are countless lines of Masonic lineage. It is common to see fathers and grandfathers passing down the lessons of the order to their sons and grandsons, guiding the next generation of leaders. In lodges everywhere, young Masons learn alongside their elders and take in the wisdom a generation gap has to offer.

For the Scottish Rite Mason, the quest for knowledge is never complete. Continued growth and enlightenment define the true leader - one who is humble enough to learn, yet bold enough to act. By upholding the timeless principles of their order, Masons have left a lasting mark on the world and will continue to shape the future for generations to come.
